Monument to Dr. Julius Kugy
Author: admin
The monument to Dr. Julius Kugy is located by the road which ascends to the Vršič Pass.
The monument is the work of the sculptor Savinšek and was erected by the Planinska zveza Slovenije (Slovenian Mountaineering Association) upon its 60th anniversary.
Dr. Julius Kugy (1858 – 1944) was one of the greatest admirers of the Julian Alps and the Trenta Valley.
He was a lawyer by profession, and also a humanist who rightly deserves to be called the discoverer of the Julian Alps.
With the help of local mountain guides he was the first to climb many alpine summits of the Julian Alps, and he climbed many by new routes.
In his books he praised the beauty of the alpine world and in an artistic manner expressed his affection for the people living in the mountains and his love for small and hidden values.
In that way he built a lasting monument to the Julian Alps and the people of Trenta.
