Author: admin11. Nov 2008
Would you like to find out more about the formation of the Velenje lakes? What are the impacts of coal mining on the environment? How did the miners used to mine and how do they mine today?
If you would like to get the answers to the questions asked above and at the same time visit the sights of Velenje, you are kindly welcome to visit us!
We will gather at 9 a.m. in front of the Tourist-Information Center Velenje (at the Red Hall) where your local guide will already be expecting you. Together you will take a walk up to the mighty Velenje Castle, which is one of the best preserved in Slovenia. You will pass the skijumping center Velenje and you will be able to see how magnificent the biggest skijump, which is no less than 94 meters high, is. At the end of this easy climb, a beautiful view over our town will await you at the Velenje Castle. The Velenje Museum in the castle offers ten interesting collections which you can visit and find out more about the history of Velenje and its development. After the visit, a short walk will follow to the center of Velenje where out guide will show you the modern architecture of the town (Town Hall, library, cultural centre, adult educational centre,…) and the places where you can get the best ice-cream in town.
Your next stop will be the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia which is a real adventure 180 meters under the ground. An expert guide will tell you everything about the techniques miners used to use to tear the ‘black gold’ from the bosom of the earth and send it tone after tone into the daylight and talk about mining today. Your lunch deep underground will be a real “miner’s lunch”. Experts from the Environmental Research & Industrial Co-operation Institute ERICo Velenje, which is situated near the museum, will prepare for you lessons on environmental research and protection which will follow the visit to the museum.
Filled with new experience and knowledge, you will take a short bus drive to the Tourist and Sports Center ‘Jezero’ (the lake) Velenje, have time to refresh in the restaurant ‘Jezero’, take a walk around the Velenje lake and see the unique settlement ‘Kinta Kunte’.
The trip will finish at about 6 p.m.
