The new Regional and Study Library in Murska Sobota has become a popular gathering place of the young as well as the old. With its modern appearance, the facility, together with its interior design makes a strong impression on guests and tourists. At the same time a new town centre with a pleasant resting place at the square by the water fountain, is being created.
The beginning of our path is in front of the tourist information terminal and it leads us towards the railway station, past Museum steam engines, through a tunnel to the street, Industrijska ulice. In continuation we cross the street and so leave the clustered town area, then set off to the village of Rakičan by the Ledava stream.
The traffic eases off through the settlement and the path leads along the asphalt road to a large farm building and an extensive park, on the hillside of which stands a manor of extremely rural appearance. A relatively large inner yard is embraced by four wings and a central, one storey residential building dominates. First records of a fortified post are from the year 1431, however a castle stood here even before this. Namely, since ancient times the so called via regna – the king’s road, lead through Rakičan. Gradually a small village Rekethye, as it was named in a written source from the year 1322, developed by it. Finally, in recent times the manor has once again come alive and is gaining a new identity. It houses a research and educational centre with modernly fitted lecture rooms and classes. The Castle area offers accommodation in 14 rooms with a total of 29 beds. A culinary offer is provided at the local restaurant enabling us to rest and refresh ourselves for the continuation of the path. The castle also houses an equestrian club which enables guests to ride in the riding school, while more confident riders can also go horseback riding to the nearby vast fields.
The castle is surrounded by a large park, where in the shade of several centuries old trees, we can rest and relax.
We continue our way between the fields behind the Rakičan hospital back to the place where we conclude our walk, at the starting point.
